After the season

What happens to the pumpkins when they leave my porch?

They do not go to the trash. When you choose end of season pickup, we haul your pumpkins away and deliver them to local farms, where they become feed for pigs and chickens.

The journey

From your porch to the pasture

  1. 1

    We pick them up

In the weeks after Halloween and Thanksgiving, we come back to your porch during the pickup week you chose and haul everything away. No lifting, no bags, no mess for you.

  2. 2

We deliver them to local farms

Instead of heading to the landfill, your pumpkins, gourds, and straw go to farms around our region that can put them to use.

  3. 3

    They become feed

At farms like Whiffletree Farm in Warrenton, pumpkins are used as feed for pigs and chickens. The animals love them, and the nutrients go back into the farm.

Our farm partner

Whiffletree Farm

Whiffletree Farm is a regenerative family farm in Warrenton, Virginia, raising pigs, chickens, turkeys, and grass-fed beef. Their animals move to fresh pasture on a regular rhythm, their pigs spend time on pasture and in the woods, and their feed is non-GMO and free of chemicals.

It is the kind of farm we want our pumpkins to end up on: one that treats leftovers as a resource and keeps the land healthier each year.

Why it matters

The case for regenerative agriculture

Regenerative agriculture is a way of farming that aims to leave the land better than it was found. Rotating animals across pasture, keeping the soil covered, and returning organic matter to the ground helps rebuild healthy soil, which holds more water, grows stronger plants, and stores more carbon.

Food scraps and pumpkins fit right into that cycle. When organic material rots in a landfill, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. When it goes to a working farm, it becomes feed, then manure, then fertility for next year’s grass. Nothing is wasted, and the farm needs less from outside.

That is the idea behind sending your pumpkins to the pasture: a decoration for a few weeks, then part of a healthier food system.
